  • Dr Monique Stanley, Emergency & Critical Care Veterinarian
    BVSc (Hons) MVetStud MANZCVS (ECC)

    Dr Monique Stanley graduated from the University of Queensland in 2006 with first class honours. After spending 18 months in a busy mixed practice in rural Queensland, she realised her passion for emergency and critical care (ECC), commencing a rotating small animal internship at a Brisbane emergency and specialist centre. Upon completion of the internship, Monique stayed on as an associate ECC veterinarian until in 2014 when she undertook the big move to the University of Melbourne to begin a residency in ECC, finishing in 2016. Monique is aiming to undertake her specialist board exams in Emergency and Critical Care in late 2017.

    With more than eight years’ experience in emergency practice, Monique has joined the ARH team as the Clinical Director of the ECC service. Monique’s main clinical interests in veterinary emergency and critical care include management of clinical toxicology especially bleeding disorders associated with Australian snake envenomation, management of polytrauma and mechanical ventilation. Monique is passionate about the clinical education of future emergency veterinarians and enjoys discussing transition to clinical practice with veterinary students.

    Monique has recently settled in Brisbane with her partner, with whom she is currently searching for their first pet together. Outside of work, she loves spending time with family and friends and baking Portuguese custard tarts and other sweet treats to share with her colleagues. Monique also enjoys exploring the world whenever she gets the chance.

  • Dr Merrin Hicks, Head of Emergency, Specialist in Emergency & Critical Care Medicine
    BVSc (Hons) MVSc FANZCVS

    Dr Merrin Hicks is a Specialist in Emergency and Critical Care with over 10 years experience in this field.

    Originally from Melbourne, Dr Hicks undertook specialist training at Melbourne and Murdoch Universities, as well as 2 years of advanced surgical training in the US. She successfully passed Fellowship Examinations through the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists and became a registered specialist in 2012.

    Dr Hicks has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, presented at conferences both in Australia and overseas, completed a Masters of Veterinary Science at the University of Melbourne, and taught both students and graduate veterinarians in Universities in Australian and the US.

    For 4 years, Dr Hicks was a founding director at Centre for Animal Referral and Emergency (CARE), now one of the largest specialist hospitals in Melbourne, before joining the Animal Referral Hospital in 2016. Dr Hicks enjoys all aspects of emergency medicine and critical care, in particular surgical emergencies, trauma, and blood gas analysis.

    Dr Hicks lives with her partner, young daughter, 2 dogs and a cat and enjoys surfing in her spare time.

  • Emma Bennett, Nursing and Practice Manager
    BAppSc (Veterinary Technology) (Hons) Grad Cert (Clin Ed) Dip Ed

    Emma graduated from the University of Queensland Veterinary Technology program in 2004.

    Since graduation, Emma has continued her commitment to her profession and lifelong learning by completing a Research Honours year and a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Education. She has a strong interest in emergency and critical care and small animal internal medicine, having worked in The University of Queensland’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital for the last 12 years. Eight of those years were spent as the nursing manager.

    Emma has a special ability to create warm, diligent and successful team environments in which staff members thrive and animals receive the best level of care. As ARH Brisbane’s Nursing and Practice Manager, Emma is keen to build a highly skilled and compassionate team of nursing and support staff.
