Our Emergency Service

The Animal Referral Hospital has always insisted on excellence in patient care, and this has meant staffing our hospitals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with vets and nurses to care for the patients with whose care we have been trusted.

This has set the standard for specialty care in Australia. At night and weekends, the hospitals are staffed by experienced vets and nurses who constantly communicate with our specialists. The same staff provide an “out of hours” service to clients of other vets throughout Sydney, to provide emergency treatment for their patients and overnight monitoring of critical cases. Our emergency service staffs our ICU at night, and deals with problems such as heart failure, patients hit by car, gastric dilation and volvulus (GDV or bloat), seizures and poisonings.

Unfortunately, we are not equipped to see large animals such as horses.

The emergency service is run in a similar manner to casualty at a human hospital. Upon arrival, the patients are triaged so the cases are seen in order of importance, not necessarily in order of arrival. You will be asked to fill in paperwork with information about yourself and your pet. During consultation with the vet, they will discuss the case history and outline your treatment options and approximate costs for procedures. If your pet is admitted to hospital for treatment, you will be asked to sign a consent form and provided with an initial estimate of costs. You will then need to leave a deposit of 50% of estimated costs for treatment to proceed. The vet will keep in touch with you over the phone during the course of your pet’s stay in hospital. Patients seen through the emergency service are returned to their primary care veterinarian or can be referred to one of our specialists if required.
