The Animal Referral Hospital has recently acquired 2 emergency centers in Melbourne, located at Essendon and Point Cook. We are pleased to announce a newly created position for an experienced nurse to lead, train and develop our emergency and critical care nursing team. The newly appointed nursing manager will work closely with our core group of senior nurses (team leaders), as well as our entire nursing and support team, to provide overall leadership, clinical training, and mentoring.

The Animal Referral Hospital began 17 years ago in Sydney, and has developed a reputation for excellence, innovation and comprehensive care. In Melbourne, we currently have specialist veterinarians in the fields of small animal surgery, internal medicine, emergency and critical care, and ophthalmology. In addition, we are supported by our national network of radiologists, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and our outstanding nursing team including Diploma and Vet Tech level nurses. We run regular nursing seminars, training, encourage conference attendance, and are involved in a range of research initiatives across all the major disciplines.

This is a full-time role, with the nursing manager required to rotate through 4 clinical shifts and 4 management shifts per fortnight on a rotating roster, which will include weekend and night-time work. Strong clinical management and leadership will be an important part of this role. Management responsibilities will include recruitment, teaching, training, rostering, management, reviews and performance management. The position would suit an experienced, energetic and mature leader. Required

  • A minimum of 5 years experience as a veterinary nurse
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in a specialist centre
  • Previous experience in a management or leadership
  • Excellent communication skills and professionalism
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Willingness to work hard, teach and lead by example
  • Appropriate qualifications (certificate IV or equivalent nursing degree)

Desirable attributes for this position

  • Previous head nurse or management role, desired but not essential
  • Degree or diploma in management or ECC nursing
  • Previous teaching experience (TAFE or delivering lectures)
